The first interview with the New York Jets must have gone well because the team has narrowed its list of head-coaching candidates, and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh's name is on it. According to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Jets are flying in Saleh for a second interview today.
The coach had a virtual interview with the team on Friday, January 8.
As the #Jets narrow their list of head coaching candidates, they are flying in #49ers DC Robert Saleh for a second interview today, per me and @MikeGarafolo. The first known finalist for the NYJ job, and there will be others likely in person, as well.
Saleh has taken part in virtual interviews with four other teams — the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Chargers. Today's interview with the Jets will be Saleh's first in-person discussion during the process.
Saleh joined 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff in 2017. He navigated his defense through numerous injuries on the way to being ranked No. 5 in the league in total yards allowed per game (314.4), No. 4 in average passing yards allowed (207.9), tying for No. 7 in total rushing yards allowed per game (106.4), and allowing 24.4 points per game during the 2020 season.
