49ers planning to waive Takk McKinley after failed physical, per report

Nov 20, 2020 at 1:16 PM--

There was a report on Thursday that the San Francisco 49ers were "OK" with former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Takkarist McKinley failing a physical last week with the Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers claimed the defender after the Bengals waived him.

It sounds like McKinley is about to hit the waiver wire for the third time in the last two weeks. He has been dealing with a groin injury.

According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, McKinley failed his physical with the 49ers too, and the team plans to waive him. Barrows notes that this doesn't necessarily mean San Francisco is unwilling to re-sign the defensive end — assuming he goes unclaimed — once he is healthy.

The 49ers had hoped that McKinley could come in and provide a boost for a struggling pass rush that, like much of the roster, has been devastated by injuries this season. The 49ers sit at the bottom of the NFC West standings with a 4-6 record and hope to make a strong run during the season's final six games.

Brandon Aiyuk spoke to reporters after Sunday's practice. The wide receiver is having a tremendous training camp in his third offseason with the San Francisco 49ers. Veteran safety Jimmie Ward has noticed a difference in the 24-year-old wideout, saying Aiyuk is one of this year's training camp standouts. That's high praise, considering the receiver's position a year ago. Aiyuk appeared to be a training camp disappointment last offseason, seemingly landing in head coach Kyle Shanahan's dog house and being limited to one catch for six yards in the 49ers' first two games. However, as the season progressed, the receiver turned things around and looks to be on course for a breakout
