Miller: 49ers ‘investing serious time’ scouting QBs in next year’s draft, Peters evaluates Zach Wilson, Mac Jones

Nov 10, 2020 at 12:44 PM--

Maybe the San Francisco 49ers will consider replacing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in next year's draft, or at least finding someone to groom behind him. According to Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, the team is reportedly "investing serious time" in evaluating the upcoming rookie class of passers.

"Speaking of quarterbacks, rumors around the scouting community indicate the San Francisco 49ers are investing serious time and resources into scouting signal-callers," Miller wrote in his recent scouting report feature for Bleacher Report.

Garoppolo has two years remaining on his contract after this season. However, the 49ers can part ways with their quarterback without too much of a salary-cap impact, should they choose to do so. Should they look to the draft for a quarterback, who might San Francisco be targeting?

Adds Miller: "One area scout told me the team has sent top evaluator Adam Peters to see BYU's Zach Wilson and Alabama's Mac Jones this season."

Of course, it could just mean that the 49ers are simply getting in some early homework and may eventually opt not to look toward the draft for a quarterback — or even seek another one at all. It's only November, after all. We'll just have to wait and see.

While Garoppolo has missed 16 games over the past three seasons, he helped lead the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV in his first full NFL season as a starter. The quarterback recently suffered his second high-ankle sprain of the season and is expected to be out until about Week 15.

Many have speculated that head coach Kyle Shanahan might be willing to give up on the quarterback for which they traded a second-round pick in 2017. The draft might be an option. Some have speculated that San Francisco might even be willing to trade for someone like Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons or Sam Darnold of the New York Jets. Even Kirk Cousins' name has come up among rumors.

Garoppolo has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions through six games this season.

H/t to Patrick Tulini for the find.

Steve Young cautions 49ers on moving on from Jimmy Garoppolo, evaluates BYU's Zach Wilson

Steve Young knows about regret. The Hall of Fame quarterback joined KNBR on Wednesday and shared the story of the San Francisco 49ers allowing running back Ricky Watters to depart after the team's championship run that ended with a Super Bowl victory during the 1994 season. Watters was seen as a bit of a distraction and someone who didn't quite fit into the locker room mentality that was built. In hindsight, Young also feels the 49ers never recovered from Watters' departure. At least, not until Garrison Hearst's arrival three years later. Who knows how many more Super Bowl rings Young could have earned had Watters stuck around. Young used that story as an analogy for the 49ers' current quarterback conundrum. They have a franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo,

Those hoping that the San Francisco 49ers select a quarterback of the future with their first-round pick will enjoy Pro Football Focus' latest mock draft. Analyst Seth Galina has BYU's Zach Wilson falling to San Francisco at No. 12. The quarterbacks selected ahead of that spot are Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin Fields of Oho State, who go one and two respectively to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets, and Trey Lance of North Dakota State, who is selected by the Carolina Panthers. BYU QB Zach Wilson on 49ers: 'I think I'd fit in well there'

By David Bonilla
Jan 6, 2021

The San Francisco 49ers own the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. That probably won't be high enough to select BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, who this past season completed 73.4 percent of his passes for 3,699 yards with 33 touchdowns and just three interceptions through 12 games with the Cougars. However, some speculate that the 49ers might move up to grab a quarterback if interested in one of the top passers available. Wilson apparently feels like the 49ers would be a good fit for him. The quarterback appeared on BYU TV and was asked which NFL system he felt might be best suited for him. "Yeah, I haven't watched a ton of specifics with NFL teams as far as what offenses they're running," Wilson responded. "One, just off the top of my head, is the 49ers,
