Miller: 49ers ‘investing serious time’ scouting QBs in next year’s draft, Peters evaluates Zach Wilson, Mac Jones

Nov 10, 2020 at 12:44 PM--

Maybe the San Francisco 49ers will consider replacing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in next year's draft, or at least finding someone to groom behind him. According to Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, the team is reportedly "investing serious time" in evaluating the upcoming rookie class of passers.

"Speaking of quarterbacks, rumors around the scouting community indicate the San Francisco 49ers are investing serious time and resources into scouting signal-callers," Miller wrote in his recent scouting report feature for Bleacher Report.

Garoppolo has two years remaining on his contract after this season. However, the 49ers can part ways with their quarterback without too much of a salary-cap impact, should they choose to do so. Should they look to the draft for a quarterback, who might San Francisco be targeting?

Adds Miller: "One area scout told me the team has sent top evaluator Adam Peters to see BYU's Zach Wilson and Alabama's Mac Jones this season."

Of course, it could just mean that the 49ers are simply getting in some early homework and may eventually opt not to look toward the draft for a quarterback — or even seek another one at all. It's only November, after all. We'll just have to wait and see.

While Garoppolo has missed 16 games over the past three seasons, he helped lead the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV in his first full NFL season as a starter. The quarterback recently suffered his second high-ankle sprain of the season and is expected to be out until about Week 15.

Many have speculated that head coach Kyle Shanahan might be willing to give up on the quarterback for which they traded a second-round pick in 2017. The draft might be an option. Some have speculated that San Francisco might even be willing to trade for someone like Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons or Sam Darnold of the New York Jets. Even Kirk Cousins' name has come up among rumors.

Garoppolo has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions through six games this season.

H/t to Patrick Tulini for the find.

Fred Warner blew away the 49ers during his pre-draft visit, says Adam Peters

Linebacker Fred Warner was a pleasant surprise for San Francisco 49ers fans coming out of the 2018 draft. He immediately showed flashes of what he could be during his rookie campaign, leading the defense in tackles not only then but in each of his three NFL seasons. After spending some time with Warner, the 49ers immediately knew that he might be someone special. They were already impressed with his on-field play at BYU. What sealed the deal in their minds was getting to know the person. Once again, there won't be pre-draft visits this year. As was the case last year, all interviews will be conducted virtually over Zoom or FaceTime. It's unfortunate because those 30 allotted visits can be a great tool in evaluating an incoming rookie. Of course, given the current

Adam Peters explains why the 49ers were at Trevor Lawrence's pro day

San Francisco 49ers VP of player personnel Adam Peters recently spoke with Matt Barrows of The Athletic. He was asked about the team's presence in South Carolina to watch Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Niners own the No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and Lawrence is expected to be the top selection, going to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yet, San Francisco was among 17 teams in attendance to watch Lawrence. Peters reminds everyone that there were other players there. For example, one of the receivers that Lawrence was throwing to during the workout was Cornell Powell, who caught 53 passes for 882 yards and seven touchdowns for the Tigers last season. The

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that VP of player personnel Adam Peters has been promoted to assistant general manager. "Adam has earned this promotion, which is a result of his hard work and dedication to the 49er Way," said Lynch via a statement issued by the team. "He has been a tremendous asset to our team and we look forward to Adam continuing to play an integral role in all aspects of football operations in our quest to compete for championships." Peters has spent the past four seasons with the 49ers, working closely with general manager John Lynch to build a roster that reached the Super Bowl during the 2019 season. Peters was a candidate this offseason for the general manager job with the Carolina Panthers. The team ultimately hired former Seattle

Simms wonders if 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is changing how he views QBs

Last year, Kyle Shanahan watched as Patrick Mahomes rallied his team late in the Super Bowl to dash the San Francisco 49ers' hopes of a sixth championship. With Deshaun Watson wanting out of Houston and interested teams contemplating what it might take to acquire the quarterback, should he force a trade, the coach has to look back at 2017 with at least a little regret. The 49ers could have had Watson — or Mahomes for that matter — and perhaps never would have had to wonder "what if?" The 49ers passed on both quarterbacks because the plan was to acquire Kirk Cousins during the rebuilding process. So Shanahan and general manager John Lynch used their first-ever draft pick as a duo on defensive lineman Solomon Thomas. It's been assumed that Shanahan is
