Giants claim former 49ers wide receiver Dante Pettis off waivers

Nov 4, 2020 at 1:21 PM--

Former second-round draft pick, wide receiver Dante Pettis, has landed with a new team. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the New York Giants have claimed him the day after the San Francisco 49ers waived the 25-year-old. That means the Giants will assume the remainder of Pettis' contract.

The 49ers drafted Pettis out of Washington in 2018. His production has diminished since his 27-reception, 467-yard, and five-touchdown rookie campaign. Pettis hauled in just 11 passes for 109 yards and two scores last season. He had no catches and was inactive for three games this season.

San Francisco had been actively engaged in trade discussions for Pettis but then waived him after the trade deadline due to a lack of interest.

Pettis tweeted out the following after news broke that he was headed to New York.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show this afternoon. He was asked about the situation with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, which was probably blown out of proportion this week. Entering the season, expectations were high for the second-year wideout, who had an impressive rookie campaign. Aiyuk was seen as a potential number one receiver for the team. Instead, on Sunday, that turned out to be third-year receiver Deebo Samuel, who racked up an impressive 189 receiving yards and a touchdown on 9 catches. Aiyuk split time with Trent Sherfield and didn't see a single target in the game. It wasn't the sophomore debut most were expecting. As a result, some started to wonder if Aiyuk might be in the 49ers'

Kyle Shanahan wants Brandon Aiyuk to earn his spot back, says receiver isn't in 49ers' doghouse

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR's Murph & Mac show this morning and threw cold water on the heated rumors that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is in his doghouse. The second-year player had an impressive rookie campaign last season, and high expectations prefaced his sophomore NFL season. In Week 1, Aiyuk split playing time with Trent Sherfield and wasn't targeted against the Detroit Lions. It had nothing to do with the young receiver being in Shanahan's doghouse, though. The coach wanted to dispel those rumors and once again explain Aiyuk's reduced role. "No. It's not a doghouse. It's just a pretty simple thing," Shanahan said. "Trent Sherfield has played at a very high level every single day for the entire training camp. Aiyuk
