Kyle Shanahan expects 49ers pass rusher Dee Ford to land on injured reserve this week

Sep 30, 2020 at 1:18 PM--

San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Dee Ford hasn't played since Week 1, and it doesn't sound like he will do so over the next several games.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that the team expects to place Ford, along with tight end Jordan Reed, on injured reserve this week. That will sideline the veteran defender for at least three games.

"I do expect them to go on IR later this week," Shanahan said.

Ford is dealing with a back injury while Reed is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks.

Ford struggled with injuries last season but still managed to rack up 6.5 sacks on opposing quarterbacks during his limited action. He dealt with a calf injury during training camp but hoped that his snap count would increase moving forward.

The 49ers acquired Ford last year via a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. He is in his seventh NFL season and has registered 154 tackles, 75 quarterback hits, 37 sacks, and seven passes defensed over his Pro Bowl career, according to Pro Football Reference.

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping to get linebacker Kwon Alexander back this season. How soon that will happen remains unclear, but head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters on Friday that the team isn't talking injured reserve just yet. "We don't think [injured reserve is a possibility] right now," Shanahan said. "I never like to say 'minor high-ankle sprain' because high-ankle sprains are always a big issue, but it wasn't your typical one where they for sure go on IR. That's why we haven't put him on that yet, and we're hoping to keep him off." Shanahan also provided an update on Richard Sherman, who has been sidelined with a calf injury since Week 1. The 49ers had hoped to get him back this past weekend, but the cornerback had a setback last

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before today's practice and shared some good news regarding Trent Williams. The veteran offensive tackle suffered an ankle injury on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams and will not practice today. No, that's not the good news. The good news is that tests showed that the injury was not as serious as it could have been, with some fearing a high-ankle sprain or worse. "[The scans] showed that nothing was broken and that it wasn't a high-ankle (sprain)," Shanahan said. "So, that was good news, but (he's) still in too much pain to practice today, and I know he'll be questionable throughout the week. Hopefully, it will get better each day, but it's not there yet." Shanahan isn't
