49ers optimistic Raheem Mostert’s injury won’t lead to ‘extended absence’

Sep 22, 2020 at 10:46 AM--

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Monday that San Francisco 49ers running back Tevin Coleman is expected to miss "multiple weeks" with a knee sprain. While head coach Kyle Shanahan said running back Raheem Mostert is unlikely to suit up for Sunday's game against the New York Giants, his prognosis doesn't appear to be as dire.

Shanahan said on Monday that an MRI revealed that Mostert is dealing with an MCL sprain. Tom Pelissero reports that the 49ers are optimistic the running back won't miss an extended amount of time, which was the impression the coach gave.

That's good news for a team that suffered several injuries during Week 2 against the New York Jets, including season-ending ACL injuries to defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas.

Mostert did not return with his teammates for the second half against the Jets. He finished the game with 92 yards and a score on eight carries while adding two catches for 15 receiving yards.

With Mostert and Coleman out this weekend, that leaves running backs Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson Jr. to carry the load against the Giants defense. The team could also promote JaMycal Hasty from the practice squad for some additional help.

"We weren't concerned at all, just because it was just sore," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday of Ward's injury. "That's why we didn't talk about it. But today, it was sorer, and the fact that it was getting a little worse and not better, we just wanted to do some tests on it. I'm pretty optimistic about it. We're doing this more for precautionary reasons right now." The good news is that Jimmy Garoppolo appears to be making progress in his

Head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't sure yet about the severity of the injury. "No, we don't know yet on Raheem," Shanahan told reporters after the game. "I'm sure we'll find out tomorrow. I know he tried to come back. I think he did at the end of the second quarter. He tried to come back in. I think he did one play in the third quarter, and then he couldn't go." Mostert finished the game with 17 carries for 65 rushing yards and added two catches for 11 receiving yards. The 49ers coach knows what Mostert means to his offense.
