San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Monday afternoon, the day after the team's costly 31-13 victory over the New York Jets, and provided several injury updates.

Defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas were not among the updates. That's because the MRI truck the team had scheduled to arrive at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, where the team is staying and practicing this week, broke down on the way there. The 49ers had to send their injured players to a local hospital for MRIs. They are backed up on receiving some of the reports.

Shanahan was able to provide the following injury updates.

  • Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a high-ankle sprain.
  • Running back Raheem Mostert suffered an MCL sprain and will likely be ruled out this week.

Those are the confirmed injuries. Shanahan did rattle off some of the unconfirmed injuries, too, though.

  • Running back Tevin Coleman is believed to have suffered a knee sprain.
  • Defensive tackle D.J. Jones suffered an ankle injury.
  • Linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered a thigh contusion.

Shanahan added that the severity of Garoppolo's injury was not as bad as most expected, and said that the quarterback even has a chance to play this weekend against the New York Giants.

"If he's good to go, and the doctors say he's healthy, and he can go out there and protect himself, and if Jimmy feels confident in doing it, and gives us the best chance to win, in that case, Jimmy will be out there," Shanahan said. "If Jimmy's not safe and he can't protect himself, then we'll go with Nick (Mullens)."

Shanahan provided an update on defensive end Dee Ford, whose injury is now believed to be more severe than a neck issue. Further testing has revealed that the veteran pass rusher suffered a back injury.

"Any time it's the back, that is an issue," Shanahan said. "We're still looking into that."

The 49ers will take a look at tight end George Kittle (knee) on Wednesday to determine whether or not he might be able to play this weekend. Cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring) is expected to return to practice on Wednesday.
