49ers could see a lot of Frank Gore this weekend vs. Jets with Le’Veon Bell sidelined

Sep 14, 2020 at 12:07 PM--

San Francisco 49ers fans could see a lot of a familiar face this weekend when their favorite team takes on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. That's because running back Le'Veon Bell is expected to miss "a couple of weeks," according to Jets head coach Adam Gase.

That could mean the 49ers defense facing a healthy dose of Frank Gore, the Bay Area team's all-time leading rusher and a fan favorite.

Gore last played for San Francisco during the 2014 season, after spending his first 10 NFL seasons with the team that made him a third-round draft pick in 2005. He is in his 16th NFL season and had six carries for 24 yards during a 27-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Gore spent three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts after his time with San Francisco and then spent one season each with the Miami Dolphins and Bills before joining the Jets this offseason.

The 37-year-old running back has rushed for 15,371 yards and 79 touchdowns in his 16 NFL seasons. He ranks No. 3 all-time in rushing yards behind only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton.

Kickoff between the 49ers (0-1) and Jets (0-1) is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Sunday, September 20.

Bill Barnwell of ESPN speculated on potential landing spots for recently-released running back Le'Veon Bell, formerly of the New York Jets. And that's really all it was — speculation. Still, the San Francisco 49ers were on Barnwell's list of plausible suitors. Much of that seems to do with the 49ers' past interest in Bell. The team pursued Bell last year in free agency before the running back agreed to join the Jets. Head coach Kyle Shanahan compared the pursuit of Bell to the team targeting and signing Tevin Coleman. The San Francisco 49ers will place cornerback K'Waun Williams on short-term injured reserve with what head coach Kyle Shanahan described as a knee sprain. The designation will force the cornerback to miss at least three games. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Williams suffered a "somewhat rare ACL sprain," but that three weeks timeline seems to be an appropriate estimate for the defender's recovery. #49ers CB

Rapoport wonders if 49ers could draft a quarterback should season continue to unravel

Fans won't see Ian Rapoport on NFL Network over the next 10 days, but the NFL insider was on KNBR Monday morning to discuss the San Francisco 49ers' stunning loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Part of the discussion surrounded the poor play of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is recovering from the high-ankle sprain that forced him to miss two games. Garoppolo's performance was enough to bench the starter at halftime in favor of C.J. Beathard. Although, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that was more to protect Garoppolo, who was sacked three times during the first half. "You could tell he was affected by his ankle,"
