Brandon Aiyuk, Ben Garland among 49ers’ Week 1 inactives vs. Cardinals

Sep 13, 2020 at 11:58 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers have released the list of inactive players for their Week 1 matchup at home against the Arizona Cardinals. These players will not suit up for Sunday's game.

NFL teams can each have 48 players active on game days. This season, each can promote one or two players from the practice squad up to 90 minutes before kickoff, potentially increasing the active roster up to 55 players. After the game, any elevated player will revert back to the practice squad without having to go through waivers. Teams can do this twice with each player before subjecting him to waivers first.

The 49ers on Saturday elevated center Hroniss Grasu and cornerback Dontae Johnson from the practice squad while placing wide receiver Deebo Samuel on short-term injured reserve, making him unavailable for at least three games.

Below are the players who will be inactive for the 49ers:

Running back Tevin Coleman is active. There was some doubt about his availability due to the poor air quality in Santa Clara.

It's almost too easy to name the quarterback competition among the upcoming San Francisco 49ers training camp battles to watch. With players set to report to the team's facilities in Santa Clara next week, a lot of eyes will be focused on observing the progress of the No. 3 overall pick — quarterback Trey Lance. Should it be among the most intriguing competitions, though? San Francisco's brass has repeatedly stated that Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the starter come Week 1. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has a lot of confidence in his veteran quarterback. His availability, not his ability, has always been the concern. That doesn't mean the rookie won't try to prove himself a quick study and unseat Garoppolo. "I definitely see it as Jimmy's the

49ers' Fred Warner ranks No. 3 among NFL.com's best off-ball linebackers

NFL Network analyst Bucky Brooks recently ranked his top five off-ball linebackers in the league, and San Francisco 49ers fans may be disappointed to learn that the team's star defender, Fred Warner, was not at the top of the list. He wasn't at No. 2 either. Warner, who signed a five-year, $95 million contract extension last week, came in at No. 3, behind Bobby Wagner of the Seattle Seahawks and Darius Leonard of the Indianapolis Colts. Maybe that will be further motivation for the 24-year-old linebacker, who has many years in front of him. "The All-Pro has become one of the league's most disruptive players as an

Having a veteran quarterback looking over his shoulder at a high-selection rookie passer is the recipe for a compelling NFL storyline. That will be one of the most talked-about storylines coming out of Santa Clara starting next week when the San Francisco 49ers report to training camp. The plan is to have Jimmy Garoppolo start Week 1 and, assuming he remains healthy, for as long as possible throughout the season. The 49ers traded up to select Lance at No. 3 overall, though, surrendering future draft capital to do so. So now, everyone is trying to figure out when we might see Lance get on the football field for some regular-season action. Brian Baldinger doesn't think fans will have to wait long. No, he is not predicting a Week 1 start. However, the NFL Network
