49ers Notebook: Hurd ACL injury, CB battle, Moseley talks 3rd-and-15, Greenlaw comfortable with COVID-19 protocols

Aug 17, 2020 at 7:02 PM--

The most significant news from today was that wide receiver Jalen Hurd indeed suffered a torn ACL on Sunday. His agent, Doug Hendrickson of The Wasserman Group, confirmed that during an interview on KNBR.

"We know what he went through last year with his back, and the guy's worked as hard as anyone on our team to get back," head coach Kyle Shanahan said today while assuming the worst. "For him to get hurt before he actually got to go out there, just a freak thing on air, cutting. I really felt bad for the guy, but he'll be back next year."

Here are some other storylines that weren't reported elsewhere on this site.

Starting cornerback job opposite Sherman

Cornerback Jason Verrett received significant reps with the first-team defense over the weekend. Emmanuel Moseley, who most assume will start opposite Richard Sherman this season, was asked on Monday what he's been told about the competition at that spot.

"Not much has been said about it," Moseley said. "We're just out there on the field, getting better every day, and the coach is going to choose the best player."

Dealing with the scrutiny of that 3rd-down play in the Super Bowl

All you have to say to a 49ers fan is "3rd-and-15," and that person knows exactly what you are referencing. It's the play that turned things around for the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

Patrick Mahomes launched the football downfield and hit an open Tyreek Hill to convert the 3rd down and initiate a comeback.

Moseley, who was covering Hill, was asked about dealing with the scrutiny of that play. His response was short but to the point.

"I just learn from it, move on, and just focus on this year," Moseley responded.

Moseley added that he used the Super Bowl loss as motivation while training this offseason.

Kittle's wife celebrate's star tight end's contract extension

Tight end George Kittle got married in April of 2019. Now, over a year into the marriage, the Kittle family is financially secure thanks to the five-year, $75 million contract extension the All-Pro signed last week.

Kittle's wife, Claire, shared her thoughts via Instagram over the weekend on her husband's new deal.

"Let's freaking ride @gkittle46," Claire wrote to go along with a photo of the couple embracing on the football field. "The People's TE is in the Bay to stay #85."

"My queen!!!" Kittle replied.

Greenlaw comfortable with how 49ers have addressed COVID-19 concerns

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was vocal on social media about his concerns surrounding how the NFL planned to deal with the threat of COVID-19 and ensuring player safety. Now that he is weeks into training camp, many of those concerns have been alleviated.

"I feel very comfortable here in training camp," Greenlaw said on Monday. "The organization has done a good job of just making sure that we wipe everything down, that they've [done] everything necessary to make sure that we're healthy and we're safe.

"You still have some worries going toward the season, but that has definitely been less stressful because they've just done a great job of having the protocols and everything set up around us.

"You never know what could happen in the future, especially going against other guys, but we're here, and I think we all just want to play football at the end of the day."

NFL restructures offseason programs amid COVID concerns from players

By David Bonilla
Apr 14, 2021

The NFL's offseason program was scheduled to begin on Monday. Players from several teams came together and opted out of the voluntary portions of Phase 1, deciding to forgo in-person workouts due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. San Francisco 49ers players had not yet made a similar statement. The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has been pushing for an alteration to the offseason schedule, hoping for no in-person activities until training camp in July, as was the case last offseason. However, the NFL has been pushing for in-person activities to begin after just two weeks of virtual sessions. On Wednesday, the league announced a restructure to the offseason programs. Now, there will be no on-field work until May 17. That will be restricted to no-contact drills,

Pelissero: Justin Fields and Trey Lance pro days to feature drills and throws from 49ers practices

Justin Fields of Ohio State will hold a second pro day workout on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance of North Dakota State will take part in his second. Both are trying to ensure that they are selected ahead of Mac Jones of Alabama. Trevor Lawrence of Clemson is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall. The New York Jets are expected to select Zach Wilson of BYU at No. 2. Assuming San Francisco targets a quarterback, that leaves Jones, Fields, and Lance as San Francisco's choices at No. 3. Jones is the overwhelming favorite to be the pick if you ask members of the national media. Fans would much prefer the more athletic and higher ceilinged prospects in Fields or Lance. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch chose to attend Jones'
