The San Francisco 49ers have announced that the team added wide receiver Richie James Jr. to its reserve/COVID-19 list. The list is reserved for those testing positive for the virus or being quarantined after close contact with an infected person. One can speculate that it might be the latter, as Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported earlier today that no players from the 49ers' initial reporting group had tested positive.
James becomes the first 49ers player to land on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Per agreed upon NFL-NFLPA policy, clubs are not permitted to comment on the player's medical status other than referring to roster status. Clubs may not disclose whether the player is in quarantine or tested positive for COVID-19.
James was among the rehabbing players to report to the 49ers last week. The receiver is rehabbing from the broken right wrist he sustained last month.
San Francisco made James a seventh-round draft pick out of Middle Tennessee State in 2018. He has recorded 15 receptions for 295 yards with two touchdowns over the past two seasons while being a significant contributor on special teams.
James was the team's leading kick returner last season, averaging 21.4 yards on his 20 returns. He also led the team in punt returns with 264 yards on 33 returns (8.0-yard average).
