49ers’ Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams named PFF’s highest-graded cornerback duo

Jun 8, 2020 at 6:01 PM--

While San Francisco 49ers Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey just missed Pro Football Focus' list of the top offensive tackle duos in the NFL, it would seem the analytics site thinks more of the defensive combination of Richard Sherman and K'Waun Williams.

A tweet on Monday lists San Francisco's veteran cornerback, Sherman, and its nickel back as the highest-graded cornerback duo in the league.

Sherman earned Pro Football Focus' highest overall regular-season grade of 88.9 among eligible cornerbacks while Williams' 77.2 overall grade ranked as the eighth-best.

If you include postseason play, Sherman remains at No. 1 with a 90.3 overall grade while Williams jumps up to No. 6 with his mark of 80.3.

Only two cornerbacks allowed a lower passer rating when targeted than Sherman's 46.8. They are J.C. Jackson of the New England Patriots and Tre'Davious White of the Buffalo Bills.

As with most of the cornerbacks on the team, Sherman and Williams are each entering the final year of their deals with San Francisco. Both are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in 2021.

Analytics site Pro Football Focus released its grades from Sunday's Week 1 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals. The road-team Cardinals defeated the defending NFC champions 24-20. It may be too early for fans to point out any bright spots from the loss at Levi's Stadium, but Pro Football Focus had no problem doing so. Left tackle Trent Williams wasn't just the 49ers' best offensive player in the game; he was the highest-graded Niners player, period. In fact, Williams was the highest-graded player between both teams, edging out Cardinals defensive lineman Angelo Blackson's 85.0 overall grade. That's not bad for a player who missed all of last season with Washington. Williams earned an 88.6 overall grade, a

San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw only played 39 snaps during Sunday's Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Still, he walked away with the team's fourth-highest grade from Pro Football Focus. Only tackle Trent Williams, pass rusher Nick Bosa, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw earned higher grades. Not only that, but Kinlaw earned the third-highest Week 1 grade among NFL rookies. Only Chase Young of Washington and C.J. Henderson of the

Analytics site Pro Football Focus released its grades from Sunday's Week 2 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets. The road-team Niners routed the home-team Jets 31-13 in a game that featured several injuries. One of those injuries was to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who did not return to the field after halftime and was later ruled "out" with a high-ankle sprain. Before the injury, Garoppolo played well, completing 87.5 percent of his passes for 131 yards with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 140.4. Garoppolo's 90.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus was the second-highest from the game. The highest overall grade from the Week 2 matchup went to tight end Jordan Reed, who saw more action due to George Kittle being out
