Typically, you might select a young and talented quarterback like Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes as the one player you would choose to build around if you are starting an NFL franchise. The Super Bowl LIV MVP was Bucky Brooks' selection when asked that very question on NFL Network.
Charley Casserly, however, went in an entirely different direction, selecting the San Francisco 49ers' second-year pass rusher,
Nick Bosa.
FYI: David Carr went with the Seattle Seahawks' 31-year-old quarterback,
Russell Wilson, rather than going with one of the league's younger stars.
While a very strong case can be made for Mahomes, it's tough to deny the impact Bosa had on the defensive side of the football in just his first NFL season. The budding star lived up to being the No. 2 overall pick in 2019. He was
named the NFL's AP Defensive Rookie of the Year while racking up nine regular-season sacks and four postseason sacks along the way.
"It's going to take you seven years (if you start with a quarterback)," Cassserly, who was the only one not to select a quarterback, told Colleen Wolfe, Brooks, and Carr on
NFL Total Access. "Your quarterbacks won't make it."
Carr admits that while he picked Wilson, he believes Casserly's choice of Bosa is a good one.
H/t to
Patrick Tulini for the find.

Are these the 49ers' ideal top 2 draft picks?
With the 2024 NFL Draft less than two weeks away, NFL Media draft analyst Chad Reuter recently identified the ideal top two draft picks for each team. The San Francisco 49ers have 10 selections in the upcoming draft, with their first two picks at No. 31 overall and No. 63.
Reuter noted, "I kept some semblance of realism in this process, however, assigning each player only once and making reasonable projections of where prospects may be selected."
Who are the standout picks for the 49ers? Reuter envisions the team addressing both offense and defense with their initial selections. It's widely anticipated that San Francisco will bolster its offensive line with
Six worst first-round draft picks in 49ers' history
It is less than two weeks away from the 2024 NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers finally have a first-round draft pick, after not having one the last two years. Who will they select? Will it be a defensive player? An offensive player? They could use help on the offensive line and in the secondary and defensive line. And they may also have multiple holes to fill a year from now.
Either way, the 49ers need to hit on these draft picks, especially in the early rounds, where they haven't always been at their best. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have some first-round misses, like DT Solomon Thomas and LB Rueben Foster. But are those the worst first-round picks in team history? Neither made this list, though some will argue that Thomas should be on it, mainly because he was taken
Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history.
A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy.
Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end.

49ers sign CB Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal
The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal. He becomes the third cornerback to join the team this offseason. The Niners previously signed free agents Isaac Yiadom and Chase Lucas to one-year deals.
The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.
Ya-Sin (5-11, 195) was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round (34th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Colts (2019-21), Las Vegas Raiders (2022), and Baltimore Ravens (2023), he has appeared in 66 games (40 starts) and registered 193 tackles, 29 passes defensed, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. In 2023,
