Luckily, once the 2020 NFL Draft kicked off, everything went smoothly for the San Francisco 49ers. That wasn't necessarily the case around 4:30 p.m. PT, though.
General manager John Lynch shared with 49ers team reporter Keiana Martin on Thursday night that head coach Kyle Shanahan's home internet crashed just before the start of the draft.
"Other than our head coach's internet crashing at his house — nothing on our side — but at his house about a half-hour before the draft, that was a little unsettling," Lynch told Martin. "But, you know what? We weren't panicked. We said, 'OK, we have phones. We'll figure it out.'
"So, that was a little hairy, but other than that, it was all good."
Both Lynch and Shanahan recently had their homes hardwired in preparation for the draft, to make the connections more reliable.
Despite the hiccup, the 49ers ended up making two selections in the first round of the draft, but not where the team was initially slotted to pick. San Francisco moved down one spot from No. 13, and then selected defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw of South Carolina. The 49ers then traded up from No. 31 to acquire wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk of Arizona State.
San Francisco is currently without a Day 2 pick. In fact, the team has just three more selections remaining in the draft and is scheduled to make its next pick on Friday, in the fifth round, at No. 156 overall.
