Torneden (5-10, 192) played four seasons with the Jayhawks, racking up 220 tackles, 15 for a loss, 3.5 sacks, an interception, a touchdown, a forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries over the final three. He participated in Kansas' pro day on March 5.
The defensive back had a 35-inch vertical leap and ran a 4.57 40-yard dash during the pro day.
"I felt like I was pretty smooth in my transitions," Torneden said of his workout via 247Sports.com. "I think that was something I had to prove, just moving around the last two years, playing in two different defenses. I just wanted to showcase that I can do a lot of things and that I'm pretty versatile. I think I showcased that to the best of my ability."
Torneden showed off his versatility, a trait the 49ers covet, playing at cornerback and safety in college. During his senior year, he played a hybrid position that "combines principles of an outside linebacker and defensive back."
Pre-draft interviews are being held virtually by phone and over video chat software as the NFL continues to observe social distancing. Members of the team staff are conducting these interviews, along with other draft preparations, remotely from their homes. Conversations with draft prospects can't last more than an hour, with no more than three with a single player per week.
