While news of the trade of San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts was first reported on Monday, the Niners officially announced the move on Wednesday. That's because Buckner was finally able to complete his physical with his new team, making the deal complete.
The physical, of course, was conducted in California and sent to the Colts. Teams aren't allowed to conduct physicals at their own facilities amid COVID-19 (coronavirus) concerns.
The 49ers acquired the No. 13 overall pick in next month's draft in exchange for Buckner and now own two first-round selections. The other selection is the No. 31 overall pick. San Francisco doesn't have a selection between rounds one and five.
"On behalf of the 49ers organization, I want to extend our most sincere appreciation to DeForest for his many contributions to the team and our community," general manager John Lynch said via a statement issued by the team. "It has truly been a privilege to work with DeFo these last three years and he deserves a great deal of credit for helping us to build the foundation of this team and reestablish a championship culture. He and his wife, Ashlyn, are special people and we wish them the very best in their next chapter of life."
Buckner spent four seasons with the 49ers, the team that made him the No. 7 overall pick in 2016. The Pro Bowl defensive lineman racked up 263 tackles, 28.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, and three forced fumbles throughout his NFL career.
