49ers-Packers: Emmanuel Moseley will start opposite Richard Sherman at cornerback, per report

Jan 19, 2020 at 11:52 AM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't want to divulge who his starting cornerback opposite Richard Sherman would be against the Green Bay Packers later today. It was assumed Emmanuel Moseley would get the start over Ahkello Witherspoon, and that is indeed the case, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Witherspoon got the start last weekend against the Minnesota Vikings and the five regular-season games before that. Moseley, however, replaced Witherspoon last weekend after the starter struggled early and allowed Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs to score Minnesota's only touchdown of the day.

The 49ers went on to win the game 27-10 and advance to the NFC Championship Game.

After being benched, Witherspoon sought coordinator Richard Hightower and asked to take Moseley's snaps on special teams.

"That's the next job," Witherspoon told NBC Sports Bay Area. "When I'm not needed at the main job, then the next one is to go contribute on special teams. ... It's all about contributing and trying to help this team win football games."

Moseley has nine starts this season, with most of those coming after Witherspoon suffered a foot sprain during Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 49ers and Packers are just hours away from kicking off against one another in the NFC Championship Game.

The San Francisco 49ers boasted the league's best pass defense last year, which was led by veteran cornerback Richard Sherman. He didn't do it alone, though. The group, consisting of Emmanuel Moseley opposite Sherman, and K'Waun Williams covering in the slot, earned a combined Pro Football Focus grade of 89.2 between the three players. That was good enough to rank it No. 2 on the analytics site's list of the NFL's best cornerback trios (h/t to Jeff Deeney). The trio of Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, and Jonathan Jones with the New England Patriots was the lone

The San Francisco 49ers are in no danger of losing last season's breakout running back, Raheem Mostert, anytime soon. He doesn't become an unrestricted free agent until 2022. Fourth-year wideout Kendrick Bourne, however, is scheduled to become a free agent next year after signing a one-year tender in April. The 49ers have had discussions about contract extensions for both players, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. "I know extensions for Mostert and Bourne have been discussed," Barrows wrote in this week's mailbag

Raheem Mostert requested a pay raise this offseason, per report

There is no doubt that, based on his contributions toward the end of last season and in the playoffs, Raheem Mostert is grossly underpaid. That's why the San Francisco 49ers running back requested a pay raise this offseason, according to Josina Anderson. Mostert accepted a multi-year deal last offseason. Of course, that was long before his 29-carry, 220-yard, and four-touchdown performance against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game. The running back would like to rework the deal, per the report, as an acknowledgment of his increased
