The San Francisco 49ers kept just three safeties on the 53-player roster but will be adding another soon. The team plans to re-sign safety Antone Exum, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. He will take the spot of defensive lineman Kentavius Street, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on Friday and will land on injured reserve.
Per a league source, the #49ers are expected to sign S Antone Exum to the active roster when Kentavius Street goes on injured reserve. Exum can play both FS and SS.
The Minnesota Vikings made Exum a sixth-round selection out of Virginia Tech in 2014. San Francisco initially signed him on November 7, 2017. Exum was part of the 49ers' roster cuts as the team worked its way down to the required 53-player limit by Saturday afternoon.
Exum recorded a career-high 40 combined tackles, a sack, seven passes defense, an interception (one of just two by the 49ers defense), a touchdown, and a forced fumble through 15 games with seven starts with the 49ers last season.
