49ers 2019 Training Camp: Jimmy Garoppolo’s reception, Jason Verrett’s reps highlight practice report roundup for August 2

The San Francisco 49ers have completed their sixth of 11 training camp practices from Santa Clara. The Friday session lasted two hours.

Quick Notes

It was LB Azeez Al-Shaair's and TE Kaden Smith's turns to get the Rookie Hype Machine going. Al-Shaair even ran into the crowd to do so, as seen in the video below by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. The veterans choose a rookie or rookies before each open practice to pump up the fans in attendance.

"The day I get on that football field, they're definitely going to like what they see," Jason Verrett said in June.

Verrett (Achilles) was cleared for training camp and lined up at right cornerback with the first-team defense on Friday. Then he broke up a Jimmy Garoppolo-thrown pass intended for wide receiver Marquise Goodwin during the second rep of team drills. Verrett is competing with Ahkello Witherspoon (see below), who has had a good camp himself, for the starting cornerback job opposite Richard Sherman.

Garoppolo (yes, the QB — not a typo) caught his first reception of training camp on a designed trick play in the red zone. Wide receiver Dante Pettis threw the pass. The quarterback got within a couple of yards of scoring. While it may make fans' hearts skip a beat, seeing Garoppolo involved in a play like this is a good sign in his recovery from an ACL injury.

"The best news is we haven't had to really manage him at all in terms of we've had no flare-ups, and all that," general manager John Lynch said on KNBR after practice. "We're always mindful of how's he doing but the report every day is good."

The 49ers defense recorded an all-time NFL low two interceptions last season. It had that many during practice on Friday. The defense had only one pick during team drills heading into Friday, per Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee. S Marcell Harris had the first on Friday off a Nick Mullens pass while S Tyree Robinson had another off a tipped C.J. Beathard pass.

Injuries

DT DeForest Buckner (toe) did not practice again after sitting out Thursday's session. He was, however, seen running sprints before practice, so the injury probably isn't too serious.

CB Ahkello Witherspoon left practice during individual drills with a "glute issue." Those were the 49ers' words, not ours.

Takeaways: Bosa had would-be sacks during team drills while going against tackles Mike McGlinchey and Joe Staley. A breakdown of Garoppolo's reception. Garoppolo was 9-of-15 passing. Although, others report he was 10-of-16. C.J. Beathard was 10-of-12 while Nick Mullens was 5-of-10 with an interception. Jimmie Ward lined up with the first-team defense during the walk-through. Tight end Ross Dwelley had a 20-yard reception from Garoppolo. Pettis had a 25-yard reception from Mullens and hauled it in between three defenders.
