Tre Boston is no longer on the open market. The Carolina Panthers brought the safety back on Wednesday after signing him to a one-year deal worth $3 million.
The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason with many speculating that the team might get its checkbook ready for an upgrade at the safety position. That didn't happen, and the group remains mostly unchanged. Many felt that San Francisco might — or even should — give Boston a look. That, too, did not happen.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Thursday was asked if Boston was on the 49ers' radar and how comfortable he is with the current safety depth.
"Any time you have guys go out, just like how we did Jimmie Ward, there's always issues," Shanahan responded. "But we have guys on our team. You can't just stockpile players. There's 90, so when you bring one in, another one's got to get cut. And if you want to pay another guy, then you have to think of another guy you're not going to pay.
"We would love to bring in safety after safety and load up every position and feel just so comfortable, but injuries are part of this game, and you put your roster together, and you have to deal with that stuff when it happens.
"If you do get injuries, you hope that guys (like Boston) are out there like that. Obviously, he got taken up, but there's still guys. But we like the guys in here, and hopefully, we can get Jimmie back here soon and get a little more depth there, and some of these young guys can step up."
