The New York Giants were reportedly very interested in the San Francisco 49ers' No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft. They wanted the valuable selection (and more) in exchange for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was eventually shipped to the Cleveland Browns.
Other than that, there haven't been any inquiries about the No. 2 pick, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. During a discussion on the latest Adam Schefter podcast, the coach was asked if any other NFL teams have reached out about a potential trade.
"No, not yet," Shanahan answered.
Schefter asked if a trade-down situation might be in the future.
"Maybe," Shanahan responded.
The coach would welcome any opportunity to improve his team. Shanahan and the 49ers enter the draft with just six selections, but several roster needs. If an NFL team comes calling, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch would listen.
Schefter asked Shanahan how realistic a trade-back situation might be.
"You never know," Shanahan responded. "I think it's always realistic because we'll do anything to improve our team. I'd say we can improve at every single position we have on our team."
Except quarterback.
Shanahan ruled out drafting a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick, and with limited selections, it is unlikely the 49ers select a signal caller at all during the draft.
"I'm happy with the guys we will take (at No. 2)," Shanahan continued. "It's not like you're going out there trying to facilitate a trade, trying to make it happen, but if people call you and they want something bad enough, you always sit there and listen. If that can help your organization out more than just one guy at the second pick, that's something we would never hesitate to do."
The 49ers will either add one of the most talented players in the draft or add more picks via a trade on April 25. That is comforting to Shanahan.
"There's definitely more than two great players," he said. "The fact that we're picking second makes me feel pretty good about that."
