The San Francisco 49ers have officially announced that safety Jaquiski Tartt is being placed on injured reserve, ending his season early for the second consecutive year. A fractured forearm limited Tartt's 2017 campaign to nine games, and he played in just eight this season.
The move will become official on Saturday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters, since the team missed Friday's deadline.
The 49ers signed Tartt to a two-year extension in April, keeping him under contract through the 2020 season. It was a vote of confidence from the current regime that the safety could be a big part of the team's future.
"We believe he's a natural fit in our defensive system, and his abilities will allow him to flourish," said general manager John Lynch via a statement issued by the 49ers after the signing.
San Francisco made Tartt a second-round draft pick out of Samford in 2015. He finished this season with 42 combined tackles, two passes defensed, and an interception through eight starts. Tartt has registered 223 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, three interceptions, and a forced fumble in four NFL seasons.
The biggest news surrounding the San Francisco 49ers today—and likely the entire offseason—is the team locking in quarterback Brock Purdy with a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension. The deal reportedly includes a total of $181 million in...
