49ers QB C.J. Beathard is 50-50 to play against the Raiders, reports Adam Schefter

San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard was able to grip the football better on Wednesday after dealing with injuries to his right wrist and thumb all week. He was listed as questionable to play on Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders.

Beathard's status wasn't any more clear on Thursday morning. One source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the quarterback is "truly 50-50" to play.

"I know C.J. was in for treatment this morning, testing it out," Schefter said during a Thursday morning KNBR interview. "We'll see how it goes. He had a little bit more rip on the football yesterday. It sounds like he's such a tough guy, that my guess is that C.J. will gut it through and be out there, but I don't think that's a given at all."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has said all week that Beathard will be a game-time decision. The quarterback appeared on Monday's injury report, but the severity of the injury was not yet known because the team did not practice. The report was an estimation of participation had they practiced.

"His wrist hurts," Shanahan said on Tuesday. "He's struggling today to hold a ball."

Had this been a typical week, the 49ers head coach wouldn't be as concerned about the injury. The team would have held its second practice of the week on Thursday. Instead, they will be suiting up to play a game.

"C.J. would be good if we were playing on Sunday," Shanahan said. "But, it's going to be a test for Thursday and probably won't know until then."

Beathard will head over to the stadium early to throw the football, and the 49ers will reportedly make a decision on his status then. Backup Nick Mullens will start if Beathard cannot play.
