News of the San Francisco 49ers signing free agent quarterback Tom Savage broke just minutes before head coach Kyle Shanahan was scheduled to jump on a conference call with the media. Official news of the signing, which was being managed by general manager John Lynch, had not yet reached Shanahan by the start of the call. Just over three minutes into the call, however, that changed.

"It did just go through," Shanahan interrupted. "We did sign Tom Savage. It's official."

The 49ers head coach was then asked about the team's newest quarterback, who Shanahan said will serve as a backup behind C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens.

"Just looking at the guys out there, there's one thing I always liked about Savage from studying him coming out of college," Shanahan shared. "He's got a strong arm. He's a very tough player, hangs in that pocket, and plays the position well. I was a fan of him coming out of college. He's gotten to play in a number of NFL games, so he's been battle tested. He was in a tough situation in Houston that didn't work out for him.

"I got to study him this preseason when he was in New Orleans, which had some similarities in their offense as ours. Had some high praises from Sean Payton on him, and was excited that he was available."

Shanahan also provided the following injury updates following the 49ers' 33-30 loss on Monday night to the Green Bay Packers.

The following players are day-to-day as the team begins preparing for Sunday's game at Levi's Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams.

  • CB K'Waun Williams — Shoulder
  • CB Ahkello Witherspoon — In the concussion protocol
  • CB Jimmie Ward — Hamstring

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,

49ers insider: I would be surprised if Brandon Aiyuk isn't signed to a new deal

By David Bonilla
Apr 11

As expected, the most significant storyline surrounding the San Francisco 49ers this offseason revolves around the contract negotiations with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. That hasn't stopped the rampant speculation from the media, with reports of interest from teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as former teammate
