San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media on Monday and offered a comprehensive injury update following the team's 28-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

The 49ers will use this week to prepare for next Monday night's matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Shanahan moved the practice schedule back a day because of the extra time the team has to prepare. That means the first practice of the week will take place on Thursday rather than the typical Wednesday.

Shanahan and the coaching staff will treat Tuesday like a typical Monday, which they primarily use to review film from the previous game. That means Monday was an extra bonus day that injured players had to recover.

Below are the injury updates provided by Shanahan.

  • TE Garrett Celek (quad); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • RB Matt Breida (ankle) will not practice on Thursday. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported on Monday that the injury was a mid-ankle sprain and not a high-ankle sprain, which is better news. Breida will probably be doubtful versus Green Bay, according to Shanahan.
  • Reuben Foster (shoulder); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • Shanahan hopes WR Marquise Goodwin (hamstring, quadricep) will be able to practice on Thursday.
  • TE George Kittle (knee); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • WR Dante Pettis (knee) will not practice this week or play versus Green Bay.
  • G Mike Person (knee); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • C Weston Richburg (knee); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • CB Richard Sherman (calf); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • T Joe Staley (knee); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.
  • DB Jimmie Ward (hamstring); will be rechecked before Thursday's practice.

49ers actively negotiating with Brandon Aiyuk, not discussing trades, says John Lynch

By David Bonilla
Mar 25

General manager John Lynch addressed reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Monday, emphasizing the San Francisco 49ers' active pursuit of a contract extension for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. There has been significant speculation surrounding Aiyuk's status this offseason. The receiver is slated to play on his fifth-year option, which guarantees him $14.124 million in 2024. While the team would be content with Aiyuk playing on that fifth-year option, it would prefer to secure the star receiver to a long-term deal before he returns to the field. Super Bowl-winning head coach Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs witnessed all he needed from Brock Purdy last season to assure him that the San Francisco 49ers are in capable hands at the quarterback position. Purdy was an MVP nominee in 2023 and had his 49ers just a play or two away from clinching a Super Bowl victory away from the Chiefs. Unfortunately, for Purdy and the 49ers, Reid and his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as the best in the game today, dashed their Super Bowl dreams in overtime last month. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, speaking at the NFL owners meetings on Monday, Reid stated, "Yeah, I

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers hope to keep Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy together

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Last week, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan ran into his wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. "He was randomly at our hotel. I don't think he wanted to be," the coach shared on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings. The 49ers are currently negotiating a long-term extension with Aiyuk to ensure he remains with the team for the foreseeable future. However, with it only being March, it's challenging to predict how everything will unfold. Typically, under the leadership of Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, the 49ers have reached agreements with their star players closer to training camp in July. Lynch stated yesterday that the

Kyle Shanahan explains why 49ers promoted Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

After Steve Wilks's dismissal, the San Francisco 49ers had several options for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Although former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was considered for the role, he ultimately joined the coaching staff as the assistant head coach under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He will focus on game plan preparations while offering his experience to the team. Nick Sorensen, the team's defensive pass game specialist, was awarded the defensive coordinator position. Shanahan opted for an internal candidate, valuing Sorensen's familiarity with the staff and the defensive system. When asked what qualities Sorensen demonstrated to prove he's ready to call plays for the defense, Shanahan explained, "He's worked with a lot of people
