The San Francisco 49ers have announced the signing of cornerback K'Waun Williams to a three-year extension, which will keep him with the team through the 2020 season.
"Since joining us this offseason, K'Waun has displayed every trait and characteristic we want to see from our players," said 49ers general manager John Lynch in a statement issued by the team. "He is a tremendous competitor on the field and a true professional in our building. K'Waun has continued to get better and better every day and we wanted to ensure he would be a part of what we are building moving forward. I am really excited for both him and our team."
Update: Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the three-year extension is worth $10 million with incentives. Williams will receive $5 million guaranteed.

Williams was signed by the 49ers in February and was the first player signing of the Kyle Shanahan and Lynch era. In his first season with the 49ers, he has appeared in each of the team's first three games of the season and started one. Williams has 14 tackles and two passes defensed this season.
Before joining the 49ers, Williams had spent his entire three-year career with Cleveland after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He was primarily used as a slot corner with the Browns.
Williams did not play in 2016 after a disagreement with the Browns over the treatment of an ankle injury that he suffered. After refusing to play in a preseason game, the Browns suspended Williams and then, in August of 2016, waived the cornerback. He immediately signed with the Chicago Bears but failed his physical.
Between 2014 and 2015, Williams played in 26 games and started 10. During those two seasons, he had 10 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles, and two sacks.
