Byrd has spent the past three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Prior to that, he was with the Buffalo Bills, the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft, for five seasons.
The three-time Pro Bowl safety signed a six-year, $54 million contract with the Saints prior to the 2014 season, but missed 15 games during the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the team. In 2016, Byrd played in all 16 games, starting 15. He had 82 tackles, three passes defensed, and two interceptions.
Byrd was released by the Saints on March 10th.
The 49ers continue their organized team activities on Tuesday.
