Jan 4, 2017 at 7:59 AM--

The team is interested in a number of individuals, which you can keep track of using our up to date general manager and head coach tracker.

It is the first time that the organization is trying to fill both spots since 2005 when the 49ers hired Mike Nolan and then Scot McCloughan.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is still widely regarded as one of the NFL's top play-callers, which is reflected in Pro Football Focus' 2022 ranking of the best offensive play-callers. How did the analytics site determine its ranking? Contributor Eric Eager used the massive amount of data available to him and adjusted each coach's success based on opponents faced. He also factored in expected points based on available talent and the play-caller's success rate, among other things. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay were left off last year's ranking. Eager explained that Pro Football Focus dinged the

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have said they expect their veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, to be healthy enough to begin throwing again in early July. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, that timeline remains intact. San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo remains on schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery and timetable for throwing, per source. The expectation has been Garoppolo will throw over next few weeks (early July, per Kyle Shanahan) and that plan is still in place.— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN)

In May, former offensive lineman turned broadcaster and analyst Ryan Harris made headlines stating that sources inside the San Francisco 49ers shared doubts about second-year quarterback Trey Lance. He also said that some expected Jimmy Garoppolo to start come Week 1. Harris rejoined CBS Sports HQ to share his thoughts on two big 49ers-related offseason storylines—Deebo Samuel and Garoppolo. Earlier this offseason, Samuel requested to be traded after watching several of his wide receiver peers cash in while the 49ers star waited for his own contract extension. San Francisco had hoped to trade Garoppolo in March. However, the quarterback

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch on 49ers' defensive philosophy, stockpiling D-linemen like Drake Jackson

Many believe the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch connection starts with Lynch, a Hall of Fame safety, having played for Shanahan's father in Denver. However, the 49ers general manager believes their team-building philosophy actually started with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While there was no overlap between Lynch's time playing for Tampa Bay and the 49ers head coach's time as a quality control coach there, the time with the Buccaneers helped mold how the two would create San Francisco's roster upon taking it over in 2017. "In Tampa, clearly, things started up front," Lynch explained during the 49ers' State of the Franchise event. "That was very much the philosophy, and it's easy to have that philosophy when you have guys like Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice. It helped win us
