The NFL handed Greenlaw a one-game suspension without pay for "an act of unsportsmanlike conduct." The linebacker was ejected after headbutting Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet while Greenlaw was.
Although the suspension may not have come as a surprise, Shanahan was disappointed with the league's decision.
"I was disappointed they decided to do that, but it is what it is," Shanahan said Monday during a conference call. "I just found out a little bit ago, or when you guys did. I just finished up with the coaches. But yeah, just disappointed and got to deal with it."
Greenlaw has appealed the suspension, raising questions about his availability for the 49ers' Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders. For now, he is expected to miss the game unless his appeal changes the outcome.
"I was told that there's an appeal process tomorrow," Shanahan said. "I mean, I was also told a couple hours ago that he was suspended, so I'm assuming he is. Hopefully, the appeal process can go better tomorrow, and we can get it rescinded, but I've got to wait to see how that goes."
Rookie linebacker Jaden Dugger helped fill in for Greenlaw after the veteran was ejected against Seattle. Shanahan was pleased with Dugger's performance, saying, "I thought he played real well."
