NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that wide receiver Mike Evans is considered day-to-day after suffering a rib injury against the Cardinals. That's significantly better news than initially anticipated.
Shanahan confirmed the report, saying Evans could play in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos. The head coach added that the injury is not considered a long-term issue.
"We'll have to evaluate him throughout the week," Shanahan said.
He added, "It shouldn't be long-term. We've got to see how it goes throughout the week. Guys have been in this position before, so we'll see how it goes."
Evans suffered the injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game. He was slow to get off the field after a play and appeared visibly uncomfortable. The 49ers eventually carted Evans to the locker room for further evaluation.
Shanahan didn't provide specifics on the injury, though. When asked whether the rib was broken, the coach simply said Evans "has a rib issue."
The good news is it sounds like the 49ers' veteran receiver avoided a serious setback.
Trent Williams injury update
There was more positive news on the injury front, as Trent Williams did not suffer a serious setback against the Cardinals. The veteran left tackle suffered a neck stinger in the third quarter and did not return to the game.
"Trent Williams, stinger and neck, should be good to go by Thursday," Shanahan said. "We've just got to keep evaluating him."
49ers opening Mykel Williams' practice window this week
The 49ers plan to open the practice window for defensive end Mykel Williams on Wednesday. He started the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which required him to miss at least the first four games of the season.
Williams suffered an ACL injury last season. The second-year defensive lineman will be eligible to return in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks. However, the 49ers are likely to be cautious with his return.
Other 49ers injury updates
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered a quad contusion.
"We'll have to manage him throughout the week also," Shanahan said of Greenlaw.
Rookie defensive end Romello Height, who underwent hand surgery last week, is expected to return to practice this week.
As expected, defensive end Nick Bosa will not play against the Broncos. He missed Sunday's game against the Cardinals and is expected to miss additional time after suffering a calf injury ahead of practice last week. The 49ers considered placing Bosa on injured reserve but ultimately decided against it.
Rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. also missed Sunday's game after suffering a high-ankle sprain. As expected, he will not play against the Broncos.
