With Deebo Samuel gone and Brandon Aiyuk recovering from ACL and MCL injuries, some believe the San Francisco 49ers face uncertainty at wide receiver. Jauan Jennings and rookie Ricky Pearsall are currently projected as the team's Week 1 starters. Though Pearsall is currently nursing a hamstring injury, he's expected to be ready for training camp.

The 49ers signed veteran Demarcus Robinson this offseason, but he may miss the start of the 2025 season due to a potential three-game suspension.


Given these concerns, some are questioning whether the 49ers have enough firepower at wide receiver to support Brock Purdy after the quarterback signed his lucrative contract extension.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio believes San Francisco should at least ponder making a bold move—calling the Miami Dolphins about All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

"For now, Hill has $28.296 million in unallocated bonus money that will hit the cap," Florio explained. "A pre-June 1 trade means all of it lands in 2025. A post-June 1 trade limits the 2025 dead money to $12.728 million, with the remaining $15.568 million landing on the cap in 2026."

In April, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier joked (or he may have been serious) that it would take two first-round picks to trade Hill. While that price is unlikely for a 31-year-old receiver, Florio suggests the actual cost may be lower, and teams should be interested if he becomes available at a more reasonable price.

Hill is just two years removed from his career-best 1,799-yard, 13-touchdown campaign in 2023. Last season, he posted 959 yards and six touchdowns—only the second time in the past eight years he failed to eclipse 1,100 receiving yards.


"The only question is whether there's another team that would be interested in taking on Hill's $25.85 million compensation package for 2025," Florio added, "and in giving the Dolphins whatever it would take to get them to clear out a key player who may not truly believe he's playing for a contender. And who may not truly believe quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is good enough to make the Dolphins into one."

San Francisco currently has over $50 million in cap space, excluding Bryce Huff's incoming salary, which will begin counting after the post-June 1 trade becomes official. The 49ers have nearly $44 million in effective cap space (Top 51).

Florio lists the 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and Los Angeles Chargers as teams that should consider reaching out to the Dolphins about Hill's availability.

49ers general manager John Lynch, speaking on Bay Area radio this week, didn't rule out adding another receiver, though he expressed confidence in the current group.

"You never close the door on that," Lynch said. "I don't think we have to. Like I said, I think there's a lot of quality and a lot of competition, and you kind of let that play out. And if opportunity presents itself to get better, then we'll always be interested in that. But right now, we don't feel like we're in a situation where we have to."
