Thomas sustained the injury on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
"Ambry came out a little sore, was proud of his fight, went back in there late in the game," general manager John Lynch said Wednesday during a radio interview. "He's doing better. And again, he's a guy we'll see in the coming days if he's ready.
"It would help us to have him. Ambry's really made a big jump as a player, and we'd love to have him, but we just got to see if he can get there."
The 49ers are without cornerback Samuel Womack, who was placed on injured reserve this past weekend due to an MCL injury. The team signed cornerback Anthony Brown this week. He is returning from the Achilles injury he suffered in December.
That leaves wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, also listed as "questionable," as the only other uncertainty for Thursday's game. Aiyuk suffered a shoulder injury during the 49ers' opening drive against the Rams.
"He's working really hard to try to get ready," Lynch said. "And with these Thursday night games, you take it all the way down there. You don't have to make your inactives until Thursday. So Brandon's working really hard. He's a warrior. You can see it in his play. He's having fun because I think everything's starting to click for him.
"So I know he's a guy who doesn't want to miss [a game]. We clearly won't put him out there if it's not in his best interest, but I think that situation is very fluid."
