However, that didn't stop the 49ers from working out several free agents on Tuesday, as reporter Aaron Wilson shared that the team hosted quarterback Ian Book, as well as wide receivers Dan Chisena, Marcus Kemp, and Freddie Swain.
Why are the 49ers working out a quarterback this early in the season?
My hunch: the team is doing their due diligence for down the road, evaluating options around the league for any possibility that could occur, with Book potentially serving as an intriguing option down the road if needed.
As for the three receivers, each player has special-teams experience, while serving as NFL receivers in the past.
49ers fans may remember Swain, who spent two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, and played 148 and 120 special-teams snaps in 2020 and 2021, respectively, before being waived. He most recently played with the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins in 2022.
Kemp, an undrafted free agent in 2017, has spent the majority of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, seeing significant special-teams action in every season since except his first year.
Chisena, an undrafted free agent in 2020, has primarily been with the Minnesota Vikings, seeing 64%, 66%, and 47% of the special-teams snaps over the past three years, respectively, when playing on the team.
