49ers Training Camp Day 10 Breakdown: Defense

Day 10 of the San Francisco 49ers training camp is officially over and the team will head to Las Vegas for joint practices with the Raiders prior to their preseason matchup on Sunday.

It was a dominant day for the defense, who recorded a whopping ten sacks, while the 49ers' quarterbacks underwhelmed, leaving a sour taste in fans' mouths as training camp comes to an end.

Defensive Line

The defensive line dominated on Monday. There's no other way to put it.

Starting from the top, both top defensive tackles had highlights on the day, with Javon Hargrave cruising through both of his 1-on-1 reps with a powerful bull-rush, while Arik Armstead combined with Clelin Ferrell on two different sacks in what was an overall good performance from the interior for the veteran.

The backup defensive linemen had a day to remember, as Austin Bryant recorded three sacks in team drills, working against second-team tackles Matt Pryor and Leroy Watson, while Clelin Ferrell had the best day of his training camp experience thus far, recording a run stuff, as well as combining with Armstead on the two sacks.

Elsewhere, T.Y. McGill had a good performance, winning two 1-on-1 reps, while also cruising through Joey Fisher in 11-on-11s for a sack on quarterback Brandon Allen.

Drake Jackson, however, had another quiet day, not flashing much early on before appearing to suffer some lower-body injury, and didn't play over the second half of practice.

Taco Charlton had another solid day, winning 1-on-1 reps against Leroy Watson, utilizing his quick spin move, before recording a pressure alongside Alex Barrett in team drills.

Strong day for the defensive line.

Linebackers

The linebackers stacked up another strong practice, top to bottom, on Monday, as they were factors in both the run and pass game at a high level.

Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw both made plays, with the former recording a run stuff of Ty Davis-Price, and the latter deflecting a Brock Purdy pass that was intercepted by Tashaun Gipson during the move-the-ball period.

Of the backups, Marcelino McCrary-Ball's ability to make plays continues to standout, as he quickly got out on a Jordan Mason screen pass to prevent a big gain on a play.

However, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles was the standout of the group, recording an interception off Trey Lance, although it didn't count as the quarterback had been sacked already, but also nearly picking off Sam Darnold in the redzone, although he couldn't corral the high pass in near the endzone.

Defensive Backs

Charvarius Ward had a bit of a struggle on Monday, giving up three catches early, including two touchdowns in the redzone period, despite some solid coverage on Willie Snead during the second score.

Tashaun Gipson obviously had the play of the day for the unit, snatching another interception off Brock Purdy, while also breaking up a pass intended for George Kittle over the middle as well.

George Odum and Ji'Ayir Brown combined to force a fumble from Brayden Willis near the end zone on his 45-yard catch that came after a Sam Darnold sack, leading to another highlight play from the group.

Apart from that, there wasn't much noise in the defensive back room, which is usually a good thing for the unit.
