The 49ers didn't learn about the injury until Monday. Willis will undergo a "clean-up procedure," and the team placed him on its injured reserve list.
The move opened a roster spot. San Francisco filled it by promoting defensive end Kemoko Turay from the practice squad to the active roster.
The 49ers also announced the signings of the following three players to the practice squad.
- RB Marlon Mack
- WR Willie Snead IV
- CB Kary Vincent Jr.
