49ers place DE Jordan Willis on IR, promote DE Kemoko Turay, sign 3 to practice squad

Sep 14, 2022 at 1:42 PM--

Before Wednesday's practice, Jordan Willis was not among the injuries head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned. The defensive end is dealing with a knee injury, though. It wasn't from the Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears. Willis was inactive for the game.

The 49ers didn't learn about the injury until Monday. Willis will undergo a "clean-up procedure," and the team placed him on its injured reserve list.

The move opened a roster spot. San Francisco filled it by promoting defensive end Kemoko Turay from the practice squad to the active roster.

The 49ers also announced the signings of the following three players to the practice squad.

  • RB Marlon Mack
  • WR Willie Snead IV
  • CB Kary Vincent Jr.

While undrafted rookie running back Jordan Mason is a fan favorite, the most-likely replacement for injured San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell is veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. Mitchell suffered an MCL sprain during this past weekend's loss to the Chicago Bears and landed on injured reserve. One NFL insider, ESPN's Adam Schefter, says everyone should keep an eye on Mason, though, who could get a chance to prove himself until Mitchell's return in a couple of months. "Well, obviously, they're going to start with Jeff Wilson, and Jeff Wilson is a player they really like," Schefter told his ESPN colleague, Field Yates. "And if anybody watches Jeff Wilson play, when he's out there, man, is he tough, and does he run hard. The issue with him is a little bit like

The San Francisco 49ers have officially placed running back Elijah Mitchell on injured reserve, as expected. Mitchell sustained an MCL sprain during the first half of Sunday's matchup against the Chicago Bears. He left the game and did not return. On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Mitchell would miss about two months and was headed to injured reserve. He will be able to return once healthy. "Not going to need surgery, but it's going to be some time," Shanahan said. "He'll end up going on IR here. ... We're estimating about two months, eight weeks, give or take a few. So hopefully, it goes well, and it's earlier, but you never know

The San Francisco 49ers have officially placed QB Trey Lance on injured reserve. On Monday, the quarterback underwent successful surgery on his ankle at Stanford Hospital, repairing a fibula fracture and ligament disruption. The injury occurred early during Sunday's 27-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. "Lance will start the rehab process, and head team physician Dr. Tim McAdams is confident that he will recover completely in time for a full return in the 2023 season," the 49ers said via a statement. Lance appeared in only five quarters this season, completing 15 of his 31 pass attempts for 194 yards and an interception. He also had 16 carries
