Earlier in the day, it was reported that the 49ers were looking for the equivalent of a second-round pick in return for their veteran quarterback, which, due to his injuries and salary, was certainly out of the question.
Following the draft, head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch spoke with the media, regarding the quarterback situation, and shared optimism about their group heading into 2022.
"We've said all along it's going to take the right deal to get us to move him, and he's part of our team right now," Lynch said. "And so we're excited about that. We look at the totality of that position. We feel really good about it right now. We're extremely excited about Trey, excited about Jimmy, and Nate Sudfeld. There's a lot to like about him as well. So we're excited about that group."
Of course, the major question is around Garoppolo's $27 million salary for 2022, which has lowered the 49ers' cap space to amongst the lowest in the entirety of the NFL heading into the draft.
Despite the lack of a trade market, the 49ers haven't budged on their stance regarding Garoppolo, and could even carry him onto the 2022 roster despite his salary if they don't get the return they desire.
Garoppolo's trade market appeared to lessen even more on Friday as a rumored contender for the veteran, the Carolina Panthers, traded up into the third-round to select Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral with their first selection on day two of the draft.
Per the Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Texans could be interested in Garoppolo following the draft, although that avenue still has much work to do if there's to be an agreement.
But, as for now, Jimmy Garoppolo is a 49er, and that doesn't appear to change by the end of the draft.
