"Vic Fangio was in San Francisco today talking to [general manager] John Lynch out there," Allbright said. "I don't think he's taking the [defensive coordinator] job there. That's DeMeco Ryans. But he may consult [a] year, take a look at it, and kind of figure things out."
Albright noted that Fangio has NFL offers and is still being paid by the Broncos, affording him the options to take things slow or step back for a year.
On Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area shed more light on the situation. The 49ers insider reports that Fangio and Lynch played a round of golf together but that nothing is happening that would result in the coach joining the team in some capacity.
"Right now, [it] seems likely Fangio will take the year off," Maiocco wrote.
Fangio obviously has ties to the organization, having served as the 49ers' defensive coordinator from 2011 through 2014. He then served in the same role with the Chicago Bears for four seasons before the Broncos hired him as their head coach in 2019. Fangio finished his time in Denver with a 19-30 record.
