"No one's told me that [a request has been made] yet today," Shanahan said.
That has changed.
The New York Giants have reportedly requested permission to speak with 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters and 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon, per Peter Schrager of NFL Media and FOX Sports.
Peters is expected to be a hot name for NFL teams seeking a bright mind to fill a general manager vacancy. Peters and Carthon joined general manager John Lynch's staff in 2017.
Peters joined San Francisco as a VP of player personnel. Before that, he was the Broncos director of college scouting and served multiple roles within Denver's scouting department. Carthon previously served as the director of player personnel with the St. Louis and Los Angles Rams. Before that, he was a scout with the Atlanta Falcons.
"We've got a good staff here," Shanahan said. "And what [Peters] has done for us in our five years here, and how much he's helped us build this, what Ran Carthon has done, we've got a lot of guys here who I feel very fortunate to have."
Former Giants general manager Dave Gettleman retired at the conclusion of New York's 2021 campaign.
Update: The Chicago Bears have also inquired about Carthon, per Albert Breer.
