Reid played for San Francisco from 2013 through 2017 and spent the past two seasons with the Carolina Panthers before being released in March. Another former 49ers player and teammate of Reid's both in San Francisco and Carolina, wide receiver Torrey Smith, praised York and the 49ers' efforts while speaking from his experience with the CEO.
While Smith shared his positive experience in dealing with York, Reid shared what he feels was a negative one. The safety was among the players who took a knee during the national anthem in protest of social injustice along with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and continued doing so in his final season with the team—after Kaepernick's departure.
While York has always publicly expressed support for his players' rights to peacefully protest, Reid paints a very different picture of what happened away from public view, accusing the CEO of begging him to stop kneeling.
Reid wrote the following in response to another of Smith's tweets.
To which Smith responded with the following.
