Those four who Jeremiah sees as first-round locks are Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love, and Justin Herbert. He explained why the San Francisco 49ers might be in a good position with their second of two first-round selections — the No. 31 overall pick.
"But I think a fifth could happen, and I will tell you exactly where it's going to happen," Jeremiah told Andrew Siciliano and Steve Mariucci. "That's the 31st pick. And it's not going to be the 49ers making that pick, but the 49ers trying to collect some extra picks they don't have in those middle rounds.
"I could definitely see that being a trade-up spot for some of those teams in Round 2, want to get that extra year on the contract, come up to 31, and get your quarterback there."
Which quarterback would warrant such a move by an NFL team? Jeremiah speculates that Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma or Jacob Eason of Washington could entice someone to trade back into the first round.
The 49ers acquired their higher pick, the No. 13 overall, via a trade that sent defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. The team lacks a selection between rounds one and five, so acquiring more draft equity has to be a priority for the team, should it not find trade partners for players currently on the roster.
There was a report earlier this month that wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was the subject of trade discussions, and Matt Barrows of The Athletic this week discussed the possibility of a trade involving running back Matt Breida.
It sounds like there are several directions San Francisco could go to fill its Day 2 draft void.
