The 49ers announced on Friday that the team placed Trent Taylor on injured reserve. The third-year wide receiver had surgery to repair a broken foot on August 9 after complaining of discomfort and undergoing X-rays to determine the problem. The bone itself healed properly, said Shanahan, but there were problems with some soft-tissue flareups surrounding the injury that led to the setback.
The injury may not be season-ending for the young receiver. Taylor is eligible to return to practice after six weeks and re-join the active roster after eight.
"Hopefully, this will heal up because I know the work he's put in," Shanahan said. "I know he's down bout it. Hopefully, we're giving him some good reasons to come back and help us out eight weeks from now."
Shanahan said he still expects to get rookie wide receiver Jalen Hurd (back injury) back after the bye week, which would be in time for the 49ers' Week 5 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.
"He's on track," Shanahan said. "We'll see how it is when we get back from the bye week."
Hurd has not played or practiced since the 49ers' second preseason game, an August 19 matchup against the Denver Broncos.
Shanahan said defensive end Dee Ford (quadricep/knee) felt good during Friday morning's walkthrough.
"He looked good walking through, but I know that will go all the way to Sunday," Shanahan added.
Lastly, Shanahan told reporters that the 49ers hope to get left tackle Joe Staley back in about six weeks — the shorter estimate of his recovery time. That's why the team didn't place him on injured reserve, which would have required Staley to miss eight weeks — the longer estimate of his recovery time.
Staley suffered a broken fibula during the 49ers' Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
"We've got it all estimated around that six-week area, but it's just an estimate," Shanahan said.
