The San Francisco 49ers faced another injury-plagued season in 2025, losing several star contributors along the way. General manager John Lynch spoke to reporters on Sunday at the NFL meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, providing updates on key players and their return timelines.
49ers hopeful George Kittle returns for Week 1
Tight end George Kittle suffered an Achilles injury during the 49ers' playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles, raising questions about his availability for the start of the 2026 season.
Kittle later shared that it was a best-case scenario for such an injury and that he might return sooner than most expected.
Lynch confirmed that Kittle being ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season remains in play.
"George is doing very good with his Achilles," Lynch said. "And for a timeframe, I think we're hopeful for Week 1. Some management during training camp and all those [things], but we're hopeful. He's progressing at a good rate."
The 49ers will kick off their 2026 campaign in Melbourne, Australia, facing the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, September 10. San Francisco is scheduled for a second international game in Mexico City later in the season, likely in December.
Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams should be ready for training camp
Defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams—the team's first-round pick in 2025—suffered season-ending ACL injuries last year. Both players appear to be progressing well in rehab and could participate in training camp in some capacity.
"They're both doing really well," Lynch said. "They should be ready for training camp—maybe on a scale, ramped-type situation."
That would provide a major boost to a defensive front that finished the 2025 season with an NFL-low 20 total sacks.
Lynch added that Williams' in-game return might not necessarily be in time for the start of the season, but that the recovering second-year defensive end is "doing really well."
49ers investing in rehab and recovery facilities
In the NFLPA's annual team report cards, the 49ers received low marks from players in categories such as the training room and training staff, prompting the organization to take action.
Lynch announced that the team is investing $9 million to improve rehab and recovery facilities in Santa Clara.
"Lynch says no changes to the training staff, but [the] team is adding three more staff members with a physical therapy concentration," ESPN's Nick Wagoner reported.

These upgrades aim to enhance player recovery and reduce injuries as the team looks to enjoy better health in 2026.
