The 49ers, Jets, and Raiders are each among the top seven teams in salary cap space. The 49ers are projected to have over $60 million available while both the Jets (over $90 million) and Raiders (over $70 million) surpass that figure, according to OverTheCap.com.
Brown officially requested a trade from the Steelers on Tuesday, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. The receiver posted a goodbye to Steelers fans on social media saying it was "time to move on and forward."
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about his team's interest in Brown during the week leading to the Senior Bowl in January.
"It's my easiest response there is," Shanahan said via NBC Sports Bay Area. "I'm not allowed to talk about someone who's under contract."
Tight end George Kittle was also asked about Brown after the Steelers receiver posted a mocked-up photo of himself in a 49ers uniform with Jerry Rice.
"I did see [the photo]," Kittle said during the week leading to the Super Bowl. "I thought it was a great photo, but you've got to talk to Mr. Lynch and Coach Shanahan about that because I just show up and play football."
Marquise Goodwin was also asked how he feels about Brown potentially becoming a teammate in San Francisco. The 49ers receiver used the opportunity to validate his own role with the team.
"I don't know," Goodwin responded. "It would be interesting to see if he ever were to come on our team. It's not something I spend a lot of time thinking over. I see me as the AB of our team. But I don't know. We'll see."
Goodwin added, "I'm always down for help (on the team). Whatever gets that Lombardi trophy."
