That exemption expires on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT, and the 49ers have released veteran offensive lineman Matt Tobin to reach the 53-man roster limit once again, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Wednesday. News of the impending move was first reported on Wednesday morning by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
San Francisco also officially activated Foster in time for Wednesday's 1:25 p.m. practice.
The 49ers signed Tobin on September 3. He was inactive for the first two games of the season.
The Philadelphia Eagles signed Tobin as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2013. He appeared in 42 games with 21 starts in four seasons with the Eagles and was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in August of 2017. Tobin appeared in 15 games with Seattle last season. He was signed by the New England Patriots on March 27 before being released on September 1.
