San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster rejoined his teammates on Monday after serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's conduct and substances of abuse policies. An immediate roster move was not necessary because the team received a two-day exemption.

That exemption expires on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT, and the 49ers have released veteran offensive lineman Matt Tobin to reach the 53-man roster limit once again, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Wednesday. News of the impending move was first reported on Wednesday morning by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

San Francisco also officially activated Foster in time for Wednesday's 1:25 p.m. practice.

The 49ers signed Tobin on September 3. He was inactive for the first two games of the season.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Tobin as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2013. He appeared in 42 games with 21 starts in four seasons with the Eagles and was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in August of 2017. Tobin appeared in 15 games with Seattle last season. He was signed by the New England Patriots on March 27 before being released on September 1.

The San Francisco 49ers have made it official: the team announced the release of defensive tackle Arik Armstead with a June 1 designation. While San Francisco approached Armstead about taking a pay cut from his scheduled $17.41 million base salary, a deal could not be reached, leading to the release of the team's longest-tenured current player. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that Armstead is drawing interest from multiple teams, including the Tennessee Titans, so the defensive tackle might find a new home

Three Key Defensive Free Agents to Make the 49ers Better in 2024

By Wayne P. Brown
Mar 10

Although the defense finished as one of the top defenses in 2023 under Steve Wilks, the San Francisco 49ers struggled in a few areas, like stopping the run, finishing the pass rush with sacks, and surrendering explosive plays. In this editorial, we will look to find three defensive players to keep the 49ers defense among the elite. The 49ers have 22 players scheduled to become free agents, 12 being defensive players. The team must address the edge, interior, and cornerback positions. Improving these three areas will keep the 49ers on top. Three defensive ends—Chase Young, Randy Gregory, and Clelin Ferrell—are set to become free agents. Per Pro Football Focus (PFF), the trio totaled 74 pressures (11 sacks, 17 hits, and 46 hurries).
