Rapoport: Shanahan has QB wishlist including Cousins, Garoppolo
"Should be done at some point either tonight or tomorrow then presumably a press conference over the next couple of days," Rapoport says. "And then Kyle Shanahan has to try and hire a staff. He has a couple of defensive coordinator hires in mind. Possible defensive coordinator hires – one is potentially Brian Flores, the Patriots linebackers coach. Robert Saleh who's the linebackers coach for the [Los Angeles] Chargers – that is another consideration.
"As far as offensive coordinator, he may not actually hire one. He may just hire a quarterbacks coach, then run the new offense in San Francisco himself."
Following the Falcons' devastating loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI, ESPN reported that Shanahan is ready to sign the contract and become the new head coach of the 49ers. "Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will become the next head coach of the San Francisco 49ers once a contract is placed in front of him, a source told ESPN.com following the Falcons' 34-28 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI," wrote Vaughn McClure of ESPN.
Shanahan, who interviewed with the 49ers twice and helped in the search for a new general manager, was not able to officially sign a contract with San Francisco until the Falcons' season was done. The 49ers gave former NFL All-Pro safety John Lynch a six-year deal to become the new general manager, a contract length that is expected to match Shanahan's.
