Another painful ACL pick? 49ers place rookie Will Redmond on IR

After the 49ers used a third-round pick on Mississippi State cornerback Will Redmond in April, general manager Trent Baalke was asked why he kept selecting rehabilitating players. Redmond, who was six months removed from tearing his ACL, became the seventh player the 49ers had drafted since 2013 who was recovering from a serious knee injury. Of the seven players the 49ers have selected who were coming off knee injuries since 2013, only outside linebacker Tank Carradine and cornerback Keith Reaser, who are both backups, are on their 53-man roster. Thomas, a 2014 third-round pick by the 49ers despite a torn ACL suffered in March 2014, was released by Detroit and subsequently signed to its practice squad. Wide receiver DeAndre Smelter, a 2015 fourth-round pick by San Francisco who dealt with a hamstring injury this summer after sitting out 2015 with a torn ACL he sustained in college, was released with an injury settlement Monday. After his preseason debut, defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil noted he was still working his way back to full health.
