The 49ers and tight end Jake Tonges agreed to a two-year contract extension Wednesday just before the start of the new league year.Tonges, who was scheduled to be a restricted free agent, agreed to a two-year contract worth $8 million, including $5.5 million guaranteed, his agent, Steve Caric, told NBC Sports Bay Area.Tonges appeared in 17 games with two starts during the regular season. He filled in admirably when George Kittle was sidelined with a hamstring injury. Tonges caught 34 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns.The 49ers were expected to make a qualifying offer to Tonges to guarantee the right of first refusal if a multi-year deal was not reached before the start of the new league year, which began Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT.The 49ers’ top unsigned restricted free agents are defensive end Sam Okuayinonu and defensive tackle Kalia Davis.The 49ers could make a qualifying offer to defensive end Okuayinonu at $3.52 million for one season to retain the right of first refusal.Okuayinonu played 31 regular-season games for the 49ers over the past two seasons with 15 starts.
