Sam Darnold's NFL journey has come full circle, and the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is making sure credit is given where it's due.
After being prematurely labeled a potential bust following early struggles with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, Darnold signed with the 49ers in 2023 in an effort to reset and rejuvenate his career.
On Sunday, Darnold captured a Super Bowl title with the Seattle Seahawks. Following the victory at Levi's Stadium, he pointed to his time in Santa Clara as a pivotal turning point in his career.
Sam Darnold credits Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy
Speaking with reporters after the game, Darnold identified two key figures within the 49ers organization who helped reshape his career: head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy.
"It's funny how it works," Darnold said. "I didn't play great football my first few years in my career, and then I come here to San Francisco, and I learn a ton. And I think because of that year in San Francisco, I was able to learn a ton, learn from Brock and Coach Shanahan.
"I was able to kind of learn and go to Minnesota, and I played good football there, and I was able to go to Seattle and kind of do the same. So, it's funny how things work, but that's life. I'm just going to continue to keep working."

Though Darnold played just 130 offensive snaps during his lone season with the 49ers, his development behind the scenes proved invaluable. Learning Shanahan's offensive system and observing Purdy's preparation appear to have reshaped his approach.
After one season with the Minnesota Vikings, Darnold signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract with the Seahawks. That investment paid immediate dividends, culminating in a Super Bowl championship and completing a remarkable career turnaround for the former first-round draft pick.
It's impossible to know how Darnold's trajectory might have unfolded without his stop in San Francisco. But it's clear he sees his time with the 49ers as invaluable in helping lay the foundation for his rise to the top.
